The castle was built on ancient Roman foundations and its current structure, although the exact dating is unknown, has a Spanish-Muslim origin, since the historian al-Idrisi already called it hins (castle) in the 12th century. In the year 1240, Ferdinand III of Castile conquered the city from the Andalusians, passing it into Christian hands and its property fell into the hands of the Council of Córdoba. Some records indicate that half of the tower was granted by the champion Martín Sánchez and his wife to his grandson Lope in 1273.

The monarch Alfonso of Monturque. However, after the victory of Henry II during the First Castilian Civil War against his brother Pedro I, the castle changed hands again, this time to Gómez Carrillo and, later, to Gonzalo Fernández de Córdoba y Biedma in 1377. Since So the castle was linked to the House of Aguilar.
