Old wooden washing machine can be seen in a utility room at the Vita Bjørn Prison Museum.
The washing machine consists of a wooden barrel with a handle at the top. When you move the handle from side to side, a kind of propeller rotates in the machine itself and washes the clothes. These machines are from around 1900 and are a great help to women at that time.
Maybe washing clothes was part of the prisoners' job.
Incidentally, behind the washing machine you can see another machine which is used to smooth large pieces of clothing such as sheets and tablecloths. This also works by turning a handle, after which the clothes are passed through two wooden rollers. Probably also around the 1900s.
A few different zinc tubs and wooden vessels are in the same room.
It is not possible to enter the room as it is blocked off by a grid. But you can look inside.
Vita Björn was opened as a museum in 1985 and was Finland's first public prison museum at the time.
The prison Vita Björn was built in 1784 and was in operation until 1975.
The prison was not big. It originally consisted of three prison cells, where two more were built in 1839.
Furthermore, there was a residential part for the prison officers and their families.
Today, the buildings function as a prison museum, where there is a display in the form of boards and objects from the time as a prison.
