By nature, congee defaults to being gluten-free, as it's made from rice -- so it's unsurprising to see so many items on the menu marked as gluten-free. Secret Congee is also aware of the needs of folks with peanut allergies and mark any item on the menu that contains peanuts, and they have a few vegan offerings as well.
Why is it "secret?" Well, when it first opened in the Wallingford neighborhood in October 2020, Secret Congee didn't have its own storefront. It shared the kitchen with a smoothie location. You just had to know it was there.
Since then, Secret Congee has moved to a location near the waterfront in Ballard, sandwiched between the Ballard Locks and Shilshole Bay Marina. It's open only from 9 to 3, for breakfast and lunch (congee is traditionally a breakfast food).
You aren't going to go wrong with anything gluten-free you choose from this straightforward menu, but if you've never had congee before, I recommend starting with the chicken congee -- a wonderfully smooth, polenta-like rice porridge topped with shredded chicken breast, chopped green onions and matchsticks of fresh ginger root. You can add chili oil to the mix if you want, but this is good for what ails you all on its own.
A tiny sit-down space -- just five tables inside, four outside -- gives Secret Congee an intimate feel, but it also means you shouldn't bring an entire sports team to this place. Large groups might consider pickup or delivery instead.
