The Norge/Vänernbanan was built in the 1870ies in order to connect the cities around lake Vänern with the rest of the country. Also trains coming from Norway should have connection to the rest of Sweden with this station. The station was designed by architect Axel Kumlin in 1870, it was inaugurated with the first train running in 1877.
The station is on the lines from Oslo to Gothenburg, from Karlstad to Gothenburg, from Vänersborg to Gothenburg, from Uddevalla to Trollhättan to Gothenburg and was between 1916 and 1968 on the line from Trollhättan to Nossebro. A bus terminal was installed in 1998. Owner of the station is Jernhusen AB, the trains using the station are operated by Västtrafik, SJ AB, Vy and Tågab.
