Chagford means "gorse ford" (chag for gorse or broom from the old dialect word chag) There was a ford here originally but then replaced with a bridge which existed there before 1224. Perhaps even this one. I was very interested to see that width restrictions have been put in place at either end of this superb Bridge, since I last visited, so hopefully no more damage will be done by vehicles not intended to use this bridge.
