In 2014, the U.S. Postal Service continued its long-running series of postage stamps featuring ‘American Treasures.’ This set of four different designs highlighted paintings by artists of the Hudson River School. Making the cut was this 1865 composition by Asher B. Durand entitled ‘Summer Afternoon.’ Durand was one of the movement’s most popular artists with many of his paintings being sold as soon as they were complete.
The Hudson River School was a mid-nineteenth century art movement which began primarily with realistic landscapes from the Hudson River Valley area of New York, but eventually came to include paintings from the maritime states and the American west. It included such names as Thomas Cole, Albert Bierstadt, Frederic Edwin Church and at least two dozen others.
