"History
Although there is a legend that it was a design by Gustave Eiffel or one of his disciples, the bridge was designed by the Riojan engineer and deputy Pelayo Mancebo y Ágreda , being officially inaugurated on March 25 of 1886 , almost a year and a half after its entry into service.
Since the new International Bridge, much more modern and spacious, was opened in 1995, the transit of heavy vehicles has been completely prohibited. Likewise, use by light vehicles is discouraged, and the Spanish A-55 and Portuguese A3 motorways are recommended as alternatives.
On March 17, 2020, the Portuguese Government, after consultation with the Spanish Government, decided to close the bridge provisionally, as part of the measures to fight against the coronavirus. Since then, the few people authorized to travel from Tui to Valença do Minho or vice versa must do so, on foot or in a private vehicle, through the new international highway bridge, through which, exceptionally and while this crisis continues, It allows the transit of people walking on the shoulder."
