[ENG] In 1399, the Sint-Jacobsbroederschap bought land just outside the then city walls, on which the pilgrim's house and a chapel in honor of Sint-Jacob were built in 1404-1413, at the expense of Meersenier Thomas Huygman. After the development of this part of the city into a prominent district of merchants, bankers and noblemen, St. James' Chapel was elevated in 1478 to an independent parish church. Plans were immediately made for the construction of a large church in High Gothic style. Initiated in 1491 and not completed until 1656, a chapter of canons was installed that same year by the bishop. In 1705 Pope Clement XI bestowed the title of 'renowned collegiate church'. In the second half of the 17th century and the first half of the 18th century, St. James's Church was furnished with an exceptionally rich baroque mobil, financed by crafts, brotherhoods and distinguished families. These chose the church as their final resting place, hence the numerous tombstones and memorials. The furniture was spared under French rule; only part of the church treasury was sold for war tax.

[NL] De Sint-Jacobskerk gaat in oorsprong terug op een gasthuis waar pelgrims naar Santiago de Compostella na het sluiten van de poorten konden overnachten. Het Sint-Jacobsbroederschap kocht in 1399 grond even buiten de toenmalige stadsomwalling, waarop in 1404-1413 het pelgrimshuis en een kapel ter ere van Sint-Jacob werden gebouwd, op kosten van meersenier Thomas Huygman. Na het uitgroeien van dit stadsgedeelte tot een voorname wijk van kooplieden, bankiers en edellieden werd de Sint-Jacobskapel in 1478 verheven tot zelfstandige parochiekerk. Onmiddellijk werden plannen gemaakt voor de bouw van een grote kerk in hoog-gotiek. Aangevat in 1491 en pas in 1656 voltooid, werd er dat zelfde jaar een kapittel van kanunniken geïnstalleerd door de bisschop. In 1705 verleende paus Clemens XI de titel ‘vermaarde collegiale kerk’. In de tweede helft van de 17de eeuw en de eerste helft van de 18de eeuw werd de Sint-Jacobskerk gestoffeerd met een uitzonderlijk rijk barokmobilair, gefinancierd door ambachten, broederschappen en voorname families. Deze verkozen de kerk als laatste rustplaats, vandaar de talloze grafstenen en gedenktekens. Het mobilair bleef gespaard onder het Franse bewind; slechts een gedeelte van de kerkschat diende verkocht voor oorlogsbelasting.
