The position stone is located close to the town hall in Mariehamn. It is one of a total of three triangulation stones on the Aland Islands. In 1908, Russian surveyors placed these three trigonometric stones on Aland: one in Ingby, one in Ytterby and one here on the town hall hill.
With the help of the stones, the surveyors could measure the baseline of Aland, which is used, for example, when maps are drawn.

Together, the three stones form Aland's baseline, which is 3.2 kilometers long. The Russian measurements were very accurate, and the measured values are still included in Finnish charts.

After the war, Russia left the Aland Islands in 1917. The stone was removed and placed in a museum, but was put back in its place a few years ago.
And yet not quite the original place. A town hall had been built in the meantime and the stone's correct location was in the men's toilet.
This was not possible and therefore it is located 45 m further to the east, in front of the town hall.
