The plaque in this building, that is an example of the houses that are here, says:
EN: "This house was built in 1782 by the signare Angélique Jouga on land granted by the English governor on the line of the old ramparts. It has the particularity of having two successive courtyards and stores on the ground floor designated on certain documents as former "slave sheds". The signare Jouga remained famous for having saved the parish registers which were going to disappear in the fire of the church of the time, caused at Christmas 1799 by the men of the Antillean battalion in charge of the defense of the island.
The property passed from hand to hand in the family, until the last heiress, Marie-Amélie Griffon, who decided to give it to the parish in 1916, and since then it has been used as a presbytery, a place of residence for the priests.
