La figura histórica de San Mauro se sitúa en la época del emperador romano Numeriano, 283-284 d.C. Hijo de una familia noble convertida al cristianismo fue martirizado, al igual que su padre Claudio y su hermano Jasón, por mostrar fidelidad a Jesús ante las autoridades del Imperio.
La devoción a San Mauro llega a tierras valencianas de la mano del Patriarca San Juan de Ribera, quien trasladó en 1599 los restos del mártir ala Capilladel Corpus Christi de Valencia. Se extendió desde aquel momento la fama del santo como intercesor en épocas de sequía.
Entre el 2 y el 3 de diciembre de 1620 Alcoy sufrió una serie de violentos terremotos que causaron graves daños en la villa. Los alcoyanos reunidos en Les Eres Noves, lugar donde se halla actualmente la iglesia de San Mauro y San Francisco, proclamaron al mártir romano como su patrón, haciendo voto de conmemorar cada año la festividad de San Mauro, el 3 de diciembre.
La Asociaciónde San Mauro Mártir hereda esta tradición como testimonio actual de la fe cristiana en la intercesión de los santos y prueba de gratitud del pueblo alcoyano con su patrón.

The historical figure of Saint Maurus dates back to the time of the Roman Emperor Numerian, 283-284 AD. Son of a noble family converted to Christianity, he was martyred, like his father Claudio and his brother Jason, for showing fidelity to Jesus before the authorities of the Empire.
Devotion to San Mauro reaches Valencian lands thanks to the Patriarch San Juan de Ribera, who transferred the remains of the martyr to the Corpus Christi Chapel in Valencia in 1599. From that moment the fame of the saint as an intercessor in times of drought spread.
Between December 2 and 3, 1620, Alcoy suffered a series of violent earthquakes that caused serious damage to the town. The people of Alcoy gathered in Les Eres Noves, where the church of San Mauro and San Francisco is currently located, proclaimed the Roman martyr as their patron, vowing to commemorate the festivity of San Mauro every year on December 3rd.
The Association of San Mauro Mártir inherits this tradition as a current testimony of the Christian faith in the intercession of the saints and proof of the gratitude of the people of Alcoy to their patron.
