In this blog you can find everything about Gorée Island, from things to visit, religious griots, pictures, etc.
He dedicates this introduction to us:
"Dalal ak diam! Welcome !
I am particularly happy, on behalf of all the inhabitants of our island, to welcome you to this portal which, I hope, will make you want to meet us and discover the hidden treasures watched over by our protective grandmother Coumba Castel.
As you know, our small island is classified as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO for a tragic episode in human history. Gorée has thus become the symbol — the “memory island” — of the long slave trade which, for four centuries, contributed to disfiguring the African continent. Gorée is therefore the island of remembrance and reconciliation, but above all today, in this time of so-called civilizational tensions, it is a haven of peace, dialogue and fraternity. Here, no doubt more than anywhere else, our citizens speak all languages ??and talk endlessly with all the deities. The Muslim invites the Christian to his mosque, the Christian asks the animist to accompany him to his church, the animist shows the stars to the atheist and the latter invites the first three at supper time.
Édouard Glissant believed that the creolization of the world was inevitable. Creolization of skins, of course, but above all of ideas, mentalities, cultures. So yes, Gorée, “ island-negroby birth has become a colorful, warm, bewitching, eminently desirable "Creole island", which undoubtedly prefigures the future of a peaceful humanity.
I invite you to come and see for yourself this "spirit" of Gorée that reigns in our streets. I will welcome you with all my heart, with the other citizens of Gorée, on the wharf of the pier, watching for the launch which, from Dakar, will transport you to us. You may not know it yet: Senegal is the land of hospitality par excellence, the “teranga” as we say.
So, I make you a promise: you will never forget your trip to Gorée."
And I, who was there, can say that yes, Gorée is never forgotten.
