La enorme estatua de san Andrés fue obra del escultor Francisco Duquesnoy, llamado el Flamingo. El artista representó a San Andrés en actitud suplicante, con una mano extendida y la otra portando la cruz de su martirio que tiene forma de aspa, como de “X”. Según la tradición, así como san Pedro pidió ser crucificado de cabeza pues no merecía morir igual que Jesús, san Andrés también se sintió indigno que la cruz de su martirio fuese igual a la del Maestro. De hecho a esta forma de Cruz se denomina cruz de san Andrés.
Andrés el Apóstol (comienzos del siglo i - mediados del siglo i), también conocido como san Andrés, fue probablemente el primer apóstol de Jesús. En la iglesia ortodoxa es conocido como Protocletos, «el primer llamado»). Era el hermano mayor del apóstol Pedro.
El nombre Andrés proviene del griego, que quiere decir «valeroso». Era común entre judíos, cristianos y pueblos helenizados de la provincia de Judea. No hay ningún nombre arameo o hebreo que se corresponda con Andrés. Según la tradición, el sucesor de Andrés es el patriarca de Constantinopla.

The enormous statue of Saint Andrew was the work of the sculptor Francisco Duquesnoy, known as the Flamingo. According to tradition, just as Saint Peter asked to be crucified upside down because he did not deserve to die like Jesus, Saint Andrew also felt unworthy that the cross of his martyrdom was equal to that of the Master. In fact, this form of Cross is called the cross of Saint Andrew.
