All labyrinths use the same pathway into its center that is used to exit the labyrinth. A classical labyrinth describes one that follows a pattern are turns in the path that form arches from one side of the labyrinth over to the other, arching left to right and then back from right to left. The Chief Labyrinth follows this style of pattern to its pathway formed by the native dirt where it is located. In the center circle there is a vertical handmade totem surrounded by a menagerie of articles left by those who have previously visited, most like from groups from the Austin Shamanic Community who help maintain this labyrinth.
The following driving directions and the Chief Labyrinth signs are useful in locating the labyrinth once you have paid the entrance fee to enter the Muleshoe Bend Recreation Area, an LCRA Park (LCRA stands for Lower Colorado RiverAuthority). Once you have paid the posted entrance fee, follow the paved road into the park. Keep going on the same path when the road surface changes to crushed gravel. Follow along and when the road forks, take the LEFT fork. The gravel road will continue farther into the wooded area until the road splits again. Take the LEFT fork when you see the Trammel sign. Then, look for the sign for picnic area #41. Drive the dirt road to the entrance to picnic area #41 and stop.
Walk a few yards along the grassy area ahead and look to the left side where the cedar trees line the forest edge. Look for a large cedar limb that is fastened between two cedar trees. A dirt path into the grove of trees at this entrance point . A few yard into the walking path you will see a small arrow with "CHIEF LABYRINTH" and a symbol of a labyrinth on the arrow card.
Continue along the path into the trees and you will soon be at the actual labyrinth!
Labyrinths can be therapeutic, a place where one can relax, meditate, pray, or commune with Nature, etc. The concept of releasing you worries and cares going in the pathway to the center, then receiving a fresh perspective on what is to come or how to take a fresh approach to deal with your tensions or concerns while there in the center. When ready to return, simply return along the same path with new perspective on your life.
