On June 11, 1993, BC Hydro and the residents of Mackenzie dedicated this recreation site "Alexander Mackenzie's Landing", and erected a cairn in recognition of the two hundredth anniversary of Alexander Mackenzie's historic journey across Canada’s west by land and river.
The recreation area features a campground, picnic area, sandy beach, boat launch and access to hiking, boating, fishing and swimming.
In June 1793, Scottish fur trader Alexander Mackenzie, and several companions passed by this spot enroute to the Pacific Ocean. While their voyages were motivated by a desire to expand the fur trade, their explorations helped map and open this region of western Canada to future settlement and development.
When the WAC Bennett dam was constructed in 1968, it created the second-largest man-made reservoir in North America. The body of water you see here is Williston Lake.
The Alexander Mackenzie's Landing Recreation Area is located approximately seven kilometres by gravel road from Mackenzie, B.C. The road is maintained all year long, but is best used before seasonal snow starts to accumulate in mid-November. In winter, snowshoes or skis might be necessary to access the Rec Site from the main Parsnip West Forest Service Road!
Alexander Mackenzie’s Landing is located on the traditional territory of the Tse'Khene peoples.
