This portrait of an Indigenous chief wearing a buffalo headdress is located on the northeast corner of the Banff Park Administration Building, above the former post office entrance. The portrait of Queen Victoria, searing a diadem and veil. is distinctly visible on the medallion around the man’s neck, showing it to be the obverse of a treaty medal. These medals were given to chiefs in this area with the signing of Treaty 7.
This was made by an unknown stone carver during the construction of the building, which was completed in 1935.
