Bess was the nickname for Bethlehem Steel in the early 1900s. Bethlehem Steel was one of the major United States steel producers and shipbuilders in the world during its' height. While Beth Steel had plants all over the world, their main production facility was in nearby Bethlehem, Pennsylvania.
Any successful enterprise needs worked, and Beth Steel needed Steelworkers. Careers were made in this dangerous profession, part of the "American Dream." While Bethlehem Steel shut down for good in 2003, this memorial was constructed and dedicated in 2011 to honor those Steelworkers.
The Memorial is a pair of 700 lb iron gears mounted atop a concrete pedestal
The gears, were born of molten iron at the Bethlehem Steel Corp and now serve as a memorial to the scores of departed steelworkers at rest in the cemetery's bucolic hillside grounds.
The National Museum of Industrial History in Bethlehem donated the gears, and former Steelworkers union members hauled them to the site. Dennis Fertal fabricated the memorial.
The concrete base for the memorial once held the cemetery's flag pole, which was donated many years ago by Bethlehem Steel. The memorial is flanked by a pair of concrete crosses given to the cemetery by St. John's Windish Lutheran Church.
The inscription reads:
"This Memorial is Dedicated to the
MEN AND WOMEN OF BETHLEHEM STEEL
Who helped to build a Great America
October 2011"
