This is an open air cooking shelter (“summer kitchen”) with attached wood-burning outdoor oven. It is used for historic interpretation and for events. The plaque attached to one of the posts states that it was built in 2008 by 1st Combat Engineer Regiment, Edmonton, with some help from the Friends of Fort Langley National Historic Site.
The initial connection between Fort Langley NHS and the 1st Combat Engineer Regiment (1 CER) seem to have been made in 2004, when 55 members of 1 CER spent four days marking the history of combat engineers in western Canada by visiting historic sites associated with the first engineers in British Columbia, starting with Fort Langley NHS. The Friends of Fort Langley NHS (formally Friends of Fort Langley National Historic Site Cooperating Association) was established in 1985. This volunteer group supported the historic site by operating the gift shop, fundraising for special projects, and providing volunteers for a variety of tasks. It disbanded in 2011 after 25 years of operation.
