"On October 15, 1907, the Archbishopric of Granada created the parish of Castell de Ferro, separating it from that of Gualchos, to which, until then, it was attached. This is reflected in the only book, prior to 1936, preserved in the Parish Archive, since the others were lost during the civil war.

Around 1930, a nun, known in the town as Doña Teresa, was the promoter of the construction of a new church, for which the old hermitage built in 1816 had to be demolished, since, apparently, it was not spacious enough to house the cult needs of the population.

During the civil war, this church was used as a stable and prison. Of the images that were inside, a Virgen del Carmen and an Immaculate Conception, both possibly from the 17th century, were thrown into the sea, later recovered and, extensively restored, returned to their place of worship. Another image of San Antonio, apparently from the same period, had no better luck, which, according to what they say, was destroyed, making poles with it to raise the boats to the beach.

In 1957, the parish priest, José Antonio Granados Vega, who had arrived in town the previous year, built a covered porch in front of the main façade of the church, with the aim of enlarging it during the summer season. This provisional extension must not have been of much use, since in 1965, the same parish priest decided to build a new temple, according to the project of the architect Don Ambrosio del Valle and whose works, paid for by the town and the vacationers, concluded seven years later."
