he church (or chapel) of Valkenburg was first mentioned in 1228. In 1281 it became a parish church. The church was located near the place where the Geulpoort was built in the 14th century. The tower dates from the mid-13th century, but was not completed until 1463. The current church was also largely built in the 14th century, but was extensively renovated in the 15th century.
From 1633 to 1819, the church was simultaneous church for both Catholics and Protestants.
Over the centuries, after fires and war violence, the church was restored and renovated several times, of which the expansions by Pierre Cuypers in 1891 and those by his son Joseph Cuypers in 1904 were the most radical. The church was last restored in 1983.
The church traditionally has two patron saints, Nicholas of Myra and Barbara of Nicomedia. Their name days are close to each other: December 4 and 6. The Church of H.H. Nicholas and Barbara is also called "old church"; this to distinguish it from the other Catholic parish church in the center of Valkenburg, the Church of Our Lady of Perpetual Help from 1961, the "new church".
