"The duke had the palace built by Bernardo Buontalenti (1570-1574) in the closest possible place to the ducal residence of the Pitti palace. This is the first documented work of the architect, who would later become a set designer and court artist.

After Joan's untimely death, the lovers were married in 1579. But the idyll was short-lived, and both died in the Medicean villa of Poggio a Caiano in 1587 within a day of each other, leading to the belief that they were poisoned.

Meanwhile, the building had been ceded to the Hospital of Santa Maria Nuova, and it was then that the grotesques were painted on the façade, the work of Bernardino Poccetti (1579-1580).

It was ceded to Giovanni Riccardi, who sold it to Carlo Lasinio, a professor at the Florence Academy of Drawing. It currently belongs to the City of Florence, which has converted it into the headquarters of the archive and the book conservation and restoration laboratories of the Vieusseux Cabinet".
