The historical marker mentioned Mr. Lehne was a teamster and hauled goods from town to town. He surely must have been one of the teamsters who regularly transported goods to and from Fredericksburg and San Antonio. There is a gray granite marker in San Pedro Springs Park north of downtown San Antonio honoring the teamsters for their part in moving the goods from town to town to generate and maintain active commerce between locations. The two breweries in San Antonio (The Lone Star Brewery and the Pearl Brewery) were the kind of commerce the teamsters liked to transport.
It is also interesting to see a home stay within a family for more than a century!
The Lehne-Itz House is still being actively used for commercial purposes. It is presently the restaurant for the multiple Bed and Breakfast units surrounding it. Parts of the land are herb gardens placed between B&B units or around the edges and fence rows. Mr. Lehne and his daughter Mrs. Itz would be proud to see their house is still contributing to the commerce of Fredericksburg.
Marker Number: 10069
Marker Text: Henry Lehne (1858-1931) followed the form of traditional German farmhouses in building this limestone structure in 1882. He farmed and ranched an adjoining 30 acres. As a teamster he hauled produce to San Antonio and returned with products such as beer and flour for local merchants. He outlived two wives (Anna Barth and Marie Spaeth) and remained here to rear his nine children. His daughter Sophie and her husband Ernest Itz built a frame addition on the rear of the house in 1933. The house, which remained in the Lehne family for 109 years, was sold by Sophie's heirs in 1991. Recorded Texas Historic Landmark - 1993
