The origins of the village date back to the year 1272 when the properties were owned by the lords of Kosová Hora. Later, they became the property of a branch of the Rožmberk family, and in 1290, they were sold to the Cistercian monastery in Vyšší Brod. This marked the beginning of Germanization, which deepened during the period of the White Mountain and the Thirty Years' War. In the 19th century, the majority of the village's population was German.
The exact origin of the village's name is not precisely known. It seems to be related to the frequent fires that sometimes engulfed entire parts of the village. The houses were closely built next to each other on steep slopes, with wooden shingles or thatched roofs, making fires easily spread. The last major fire was recorded on August 30, 1898, during which 35 houses were engulfed in flames within half an hour. The original church tower also burned down after being struck by lightning on that fateful day, September 8, 1900.
