Fue construido durante la primera dominación florentina ( 1406 ), cuando se reestructuró toda el área de lo que solía ser el Arsenal de la República . El nombre se eligió en contraste con la antigua Torre Ghibellina , construida en 1290 en la esquina suroeste del distrito y luego destruida. La torre también tenía la función de permitir el avistamiento, siendo lo suficientemente alta para ver el mar y al mismo tiempo dominar la ciudad, siendo claramente visible desde la primera mitad de las riberas.
La torre Guelph, junto con la torre Sant'Agnese , la torre Canto (incorporada dentro del Baluarte de San Giorgio ) y la torre Ghibellina , delimitaban la antigua zona de Terzanaia (hoy en gran parte desaparecida y conocida como la Ciudadela ), donde se construyeron las galeras.
Minado por los alemanes en retirada en julio de 1944, fue reconstruido después de la guerra ( 1956 ) sin mantener por completo su aspecto original.
Hoy está abierto al público y permite admirar una vista maravillosa desde la cima. En el interior se encuentran los antiguos escudos familiares tallados de capitanes y comisionados florentinos que gobernaron la ciudad.

The Guelph tower, together with the Sant'Agnese tower, the Canto tower (incorporated within the San Giorgio Bastion) and the Ghibellina tower, bounded the ancient area of ??Terzanaia (today largely disappeared and known as the Citadel), where the They built the galleys.
Mined by the retreating Germans in July 1944, it was rebuilt after the war (1956) without fully maintaining its original appearance.
Today it is open to the public and allows you to admire a wonderful view from the top. Inside are the ancient carved family crests of Florentine captains and commissioners who ruled the city.
