It is in the classicist baroque style and has been declared a National Historical Monument since 1923 .
This building is located in the historic center , at the confluence of Calle Compañía with Plaza de la Constitución, next to the Escuela de San Telmo (headquarters of the Ateneo de Málaga) and close to the Church of Santo Cristo de la Salud and the Carmen Thyssen Museum .
Built in 1785, it was the location of the Montepío de Socorro a los Cosecheros, of the Consulado Marítimo y Terrestre, and since 1856 it has been the headquarters of the Sociedad Económica de Amigos del País and its important library.
Designed by the architect José Martín de Aldehuela, the building is a typical example of 18th century domestic architecture. It is notable for its façade of varied marbles in whose attic is a medallion with the motto Socorre al diligente. Deny the lazy. It has balconies on the upper floors where regular openings and a central courtyard surrounded by overhanging galleries.
