The Union Soldiers monument is made of granite and stands 65' tall in the center of the Hampton National Cemetery. It was erected through the efforts of Dorothea Dix, the superintendent of women nurses in the U.S. Army during the Civil War. In 1868 Dix transferred ownership of the monument to the United States.
