Built in 1860, the Capitol Hill School is a two-room primary school in Gothic Revival style. It is a one-story brick building with sandstone foundation and plain brick drip mould. The main portion is 42 feet by 27 feet in a cruciform plan. There is a hip roof over the central square of the crucifor mand a gabled projecting bay on each of its four main facets. Tracery _verge boards decorate the projecting gables and just under the gable is an ornamental circular window. There are brackets under the remaining eaves. Tall rectangular windows adorn each facet of the building while Gothic arched windows are centered on each projecting bay. Originally, a Gothic cupola and four chimneys with ornamental caps graced the roof of the Capitol Hill School; these have been removed.
Inside, the two school rooms are separated by a wall running east and west. The ceilings are fourteen feet high. This together with numerous windows produces a light and airy effect. The east bay was extended in this century to provide for storage and indoor plumbing. As a part of the restoration the exterior has been sandblasted to uncover the original reddish brown brick. The exterior trim has been repainted, the building has been reroofed and a new furnace added. One room has been set up as a children's museum, the other as a schoolroom. The Capitol Hill School is one of the few remaining primary schools of the Gothic Revival style in Michigan.-
