A church has stood on this spot since the 4th century and has always been dedicated to St. Praxedes and her sister, St. Prudentiana, who were martyred in the year 165. The current structure was begun in the late eight century and finished in the early nineth century. At that time, the two sisters’ relics were moved from the Catacomb of Priscilla to this site where they remain till this day. The wonderful mosaics in the apse date from this period as well.
The stamp was part of a set of twelve issued in 1949 showcasing the basilicas of Rome. Most show the exterior of the buildings but some, like this one, show the interior. They were based on drawings by prominent Italian artist/designer Corrado Mezzana who designed over 200 postage stamps for Italy during the 1930s and 40s.
