In 1969, the small Republic of San Marino issued a set a four postage stamps celebrating late medieval painter Ambrogio Lorenzetti of the Sienese School. Three of the four stamps show details from a mural in the Council Room of Siena's Palazzo Pubblico which has become known as the ‘Allegory of Good and Bad Government.’ The fourth stamp, the high value of the set, shows this painting from the Pinacoteca Nazionale also located in Siena. At the time this stamp was issued, the painting was attributed to Lorenzetti (which accounts for the inscription on the stamp) but is now attributed to Stefano di Giovanni.
Stefano di Giovanni, who is usually called Sassetta these days, is mostly known for his religious commissions including the altarpiece for the Siena Cathedral. Many of his works may be found in major museums all over the world such as the Louvre in Paris, the Uffizi in Florence, the National Gallery in London and the Met in New York City.
The rather small painting reproduced on the stamp dates from around 1450 and is variously called ‘City by the Sea’ or ‘Castle by the Sea.’ The tempera on panel work is believed to portray the small Tuscan coastal town of Talamone.
