"Main altarpiece
The main altarpiece is an imposing marble work made between 1618 and 1628 and was made with marble from Cabra . It was drawn up by Alonso Matías, who directed it until 1625, after which Juan de Aranda Salazar took charge of it himself ; the central temple remained unfinished until 1653, the year in which it was finished by Sebastián Vidal according to the designs and sketches of his predecessor. The sculptural part, made in 1626, was mainly due to Pedro Freile de GuevaraAlso collaborating with Matías Conrado and Juan Porras, among others. The silver front of the altar was made in 1816 in the Martínez workshops in Madrid, commissioned by Bishop Pedro Antonio Alcántara Trevilla. The main altarpiece consists of a bench, a tripartite body with fluted columns and an attic; the central street houses the demonstrator temple and the lateral ones house two canvases made in 1713 by Antonio Palomino , and they represent San Acisclo and Santa Victoria , surmounted by split pediments with allegorical figures of Religion and Abundance. The separating cornice has a pediment with reclining figures of Faith and Hope. The center of the attic is occupied by the canvas of the Assumption of the Virgin, flanked by the canvases of San Pelagioand Santa Flora , crowned by pediments where Justice and Temperance are represented. At the height of the columns are the images of Saint Peter and Saint Paul .
The lateral walls of the presbytery show semicircular arches decorated with the biscuit motif , typical of Hernán Ruiz el Viejo ; above there is an inscription that alludes to the completion of the work while Cristóbal de Rojas was Bishop of Córdoba . In the upper part there is another body, arranged as an altarpiece, with a central hole for stained glass, which correspond to the 20th century and represent the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Virgin.
The central pillar on the left has a red marble altar with a carving of Santiago Matamoros , with an inscription related to Bishop Mardones and the date of 1615. On the opposite pillar is the praying figure of Bishop Mardones, the work of Pedro Freile de Guevara from 1618. In the center of the presbytery, an altar table decorated with silver and wood plates, which were donated in 1678 by Francisco Bañuelos, has recently been placed. From the keystone hangs the large silver lamp donated by Bishop Cristóbal de Lovera y Torres in 1629 and made by the Cordovan silversmith Martín Sánchez de la Cruz."
