Hell's Crossing is a NFS Campground along a pretty tame section of the American River up on Chinook Pass.

Hell's Crossing is one of several campgrounds along the Chinook Pass. It's located along the American River and is supposedley a good spot for fly fishing. No flush toilets available, only outhouses, but there are water taps and also garbage service. Camp hosts are on site to assist you and they sell fire wood from their site near the entrance of the campground.
The only drawback to this campground is that it is close to the highway, but most of the campgrounds along Chinook Pass are situated like this.
