Seeing the historic Bridge of Sighs in Venice immediately brought to my mind the heavy metal lines of the Robin Trower classic.

“The sun don't shine
The moon don't move the tides,
To wash me clean
Why so unforgiving and why so cold
Been a long time crossing bridge of sighs”
- Robin Trower, from the song ‘Bridge of Sighs’ on the 1974 album of the same name
The ornate stone ‘Bridge of Sighs’ in Venice was built in 1600 and connected the Doge’s Palace with what was then a prison. It supposedly got its name from the despondence of the prisoners who, upon crossing the bridge, were getting their last glimpse of the outside world.
This image of prisoners being marched to their doom roughly corresponds to the downcast lyrics of the song except that on multiple occasions Robin Trower has claimed he got the title of the song from the name of a racehorse and not the famous Venetian landmark. Well, that confounds things a bit. But regardless of the song title’s inspiration, I’m sure that either directly or indirectly, the horse was named for the famous landmark.
