Most of the Union soldiers interred here died of disease, not injuries from combat. Camp Calhoun was overcrowded, infested with rats, and rife with disease. Those who died here were buried in Calhoun's cemetery and wherever places could be found. Forgotten for a century, this cemetery was reconstructed and rededicated in 2008.
