Les 26, 27 et 28 mai 1940, des soldats d’une division de la Wehrmacht incendièrent trois cents maisons et tuèrent entre quatre-vingts et centre vingt-quatre civils (selon les sources). Ils avaient eu à combattre des troupes françaises et britanniques qui protégeaient l’évacuation vers Dunkerque, lors de combats qui eurent lieu du 25 au 27 mai, et avaient été précédemment bousculés lors de la bataille d’Arras, le 21 mai. Ces troupes eurent en effet à affronter « une unité britannique, une compagnie du 106e régiment d’infanterie coloniale composée d’éléments français et de musulmans Nord-Africains et un détachement de spahis marocains », qui eurent pour consigne de résister à partir du 24 mai. Par la suite, le 11e régiment de zouaves les rejoignit. Les Allemands furent tenus en échec pendant soixante-douze heures, les Alliés quittant leurs positions dans la nuit du 27 au 28 mai, en direction de Seclin et Lille.

D’autres massacres de civils et de militaires alliés furent perpétrés, à Berles-Monchel (21 mai), Aubigny-en-Artois (22 mai), puis à Beuvry (28 mai), et donc à Oignies et Courrières le même jour. Au total, Yves Le Maner estime qu’il y eut environ cinq cents civils et militaires abattus.

Vers six heures du matin, des soldats allemands entrèrent à Oignies, protégés par des civils français : Auguste Leveugle et Charles Grulois furent tués. D’autres habitants furent poussés en avant, hommes, femmes et enfants. « Sur la place, d’autres habitants [furent] fauchés par des rafales de mitrailleuses postées aux différents carrefours. Leurs corps rassemblés dans la cour du Château, furent arrosés d’essence et brûlés ». Des scènes identiques se produisirent dans d’autres rues, tandis que les maisons étaient incendiées. Un orage éclata vers treize heures, qui ralentit les exactions.

Au pont de la Batterie, sur la Deûle, un groupe de dix-sept hommes fut obligé de traversé le pont provisoire, et prit la direction de Courrières. Ils durent creuser une fosse ; battus, ils furent abattus.

« Dans la villa les Floralies, route de Courrières, [les SS] s’emparèrent d’un officier anglais, le lièrent sur une chaise-longue, l’aspergèrent d’essence et le brûlèrent vif ». D’après un témoignage, le responsable du massacre fut le commandant Orst Kolrep, contre qui le comité local de libération déposa plainte le 1er octobre 1944. Le 13 juillet 1947, Vincent Auriol, président de la République, accompagné de François Mitterrand, ministre des Anciens combattants et des Victimes de guerre, remit à la commune la Croix de guerre 1939-1945 et inaugura le mausolée à la mémoire des quatre-vingts fusillés du 28 mai 1940 et déclara Oignies « ville martyre ».

On May 26, 27 and 28, 1940, soldiers of a Wehrmacht division burned down three hundred houses and killed between eighty and center twenty-four civilians (according to the sources). They had had to fight French and British troops protecting the evacuation to Dunkirk, during fighting which took place from May 25 to 27, and had previously been jostled during the Battle of Arras on May 21. These troops had to face 'a British unit, a company of the 106th colonial infantry regiment composed of French elements and North African Muslims and a detachment of Moroccan spahis', who were instructed to resist from 24 may. Subsequently, the 11th regiment of zouaves joined them. The Germans were held in check for seventy-two hours, the Allies leaving their positions on the night of May 27 to 28, in the direction of Seclin and Lille.

Other massacres of civilians and Allied soldiers were perpetrated, in Berles-Monchel (May 21), Aubigny-en-Artois (May 22), then in Beuvry (May 28), and therefore in Oignies and Courrières on the same day. In total, Yves Le Maner estimates that there were about five hundred civilians and soldiers killed.

Around six o'clock in the morning, German soldiers entered Oignies, protected by French civilians: Auguste Leveugle and Charles Grulois were killed. Other inhabitants were pushed forward, men, women and children. “In the square, other residents [were] mowed down by bursts of machine guns posted at various crossroads. Their bodies gathered in the courtyard of the Castle, were doused with gasoline and burned. Identical scenes occurred in other streets, while houses were set on fire. A storm broke around one o'clock, which slowed down the exactions.

At the Battery bridge, on the Deûle, a group of seventeen men was forced to cross the temporary bridge, and took the direction of Courrières. They had to dig a pit; beaten, they were cut down.

“In the Villa les Floralies, route de Courrières, [the SS] seized an English officer, tied him to a chaise-longue, sprinkled him with petrol and burned him alive”. According to one testimony, the person responsible for the massacre was Commander Orst Kolrep, against whom the local liberation committee lodged a complaint on October 1, 1944. On July 13, 1947, Vincent Auriol, President of the Republic, accompanied by François Mitterrand, Minister of Veterans Affairs and War Victims, presented the town with the Croix de guerre 1939-1945 and inaugurated the mausoleum in memory of the eighty executed on May 28, 1940 and declared Oignies a 'martyr town'.
