Luis Felipe José Azueta Abad nació en Acapulco (Guerrero) el 2 de mayo de 1895. Fue hijo del comodoro Manuel Azueta Perillos.
El 21 de abril de 1914, el puerto de Veracruz sufrió la invasión de tropas estadounidenses en lo que se ha llamado la Ocupación estadounidense de Veracruz. Para el mediodía, el Comodoro Manuel Azueta Perillos, padre de José, no habiendo aún recibido órdenes del general Gustavo A. Mass, comandante militar de la plaza, optó por preparar a los cadetes de la Escuela Naval para resistir la invasión.
Durante la batalla, resistió con valentía frente a las tropas estadounidenses. Fue gravemente herido y evacuado.
Tras enterarse de su heroísmo, el almirante Frank Friday Fletcher, oficial al mando de las tropas estadounidenses, le ofreció los servicios de su médico para que le atendiera. José Azueta rechazó la oferta.
Murió el 10 de mayo a causa de las heridas.

La estatua es de bronce y mide 2,5 m de altura. Representa al teniente Azueta con su ametralladora.


Luis Felipe José Azueta Abad was born in Acapulco (Guerrero) on May 2, 1895. He was the son of Commodore Manuel Azueta Perillos.
On April 21, 1914, the port of Veracruz suffered the invasion of U.S. troops in what has been called the U.S. Occupation of Veracruz. By noon, Commodore Manuel Azueta Perillos, José's father, not having yet received orders from General Gustavo A. Mass, military commander of the plaza, opted to prepare the cadets of the Naval School to resist the invasion.
During the battle, he resisted with courage in front of the US troops. He was severly wounded and evacuated.
After having heard about his heroism, admiral Frank Friday Fletcher, commanding officer of the US troops offered him the service of his doctor to take care of him. José Azueta rejected the offer.
He died on 10th of May due to his wounds.

The statue is in bronze an 2.5m height. It represents the lieutenant Azueta with his machine-gun.
