Triceratops length is estimated at about 7.9–9.0 m, height at 2.9–3.0 m, and body weight at 6.1–12.0 tons. It is most distinguished by its large skull, one of the most impressive among land animals. The largest known skull, specimen BYU 12183, would have had an estimated total length of 2.5 meters if complete. This may have been almost a third of the length of the entire animal. A single horn protruded from its snout above its nostrils, while a pair of horns about a meter long were above its eyes. A relatively short bony ruff extended from the cranial vault, decorated with epoccipital bones in some specimens. Most other Ceratopsids had large windows in the ruff, while in Triceratops it was solid bone.
The skin of the Triceratops made it stand out among the dinosaurs. Skin impressions from an as yet undescribed individual show that some species may have been covered in hair-like formations similar to those found on the primitive ceratopsian Psittacosaurus.
