El Cine-Teatro Albéniz es un edificio construido en 1945 por el arquitecto y urbanista José González Edo, de estilo historicista y con reminiscencias de las salas cinematográficas californianas. Abrió sus puertas el 9 de septiembre de 1945 con la opereta titulada "Luna de Miel en El Cairo"; la entrada más cara costaba 10 pesetas. La primera proyección de cine fue "Enamorados", con Jeanette MacDonald y Nelson Eddy, el 3 de octubre de 1945
En 1952 lo adquiere el productor y exhibidor cinematográfico Francisco Gómez Reyes, empresario marbellí creador del mayor grupo exhibidor de Andalucía con hasta 42 cines desde Algeciras hasta Vélez y por el norte hasta Córdoba; también productor junto a José María Forqué. Este empresario hace una profunda rehabilitación y ampliación, transformando de Teatro en salas de cine pero manteniendo viva la decoración del edificio.
Fue durante más de 50 años el responsable de una sala que vivió su época dorada entre los años 60 y 70 con los estrenos de las proyecciones a nivel nacional de 'Lo que el viento se llevó' o 'Ben Hur', y también cuando el Albéniz proyectó «en exclusiva en Málaga» las andanzas de Terminator.
Aun siendo este empresario dueño del cine empieza a colaborar con el Ayuntamiento de Málaga desde mediados de los 90, comenzando su andadura como sede de la Cinemateca Municipal ofreciendo proyecciones de cine independiente en versión original y como importantes colaboradores del Festival de cine de Málaga, dejando el cine Albéniz de manera gratuita durante los primeros 12 años, siendo su ayuda esencial para las proyecciones cinematográficas expuestas en el Festival de Cine de Málaga.
Tras ser expropiado por el Ayuntamiento, el propietario no tuvo más remedio que cerrar sus puertas en 2008. Al ser adquirido por el Ayuntamiento de Málaga, se continuó con la misma actividad que el anterior propietario y se volvió a reabrir coincidiendo su reapertura con el 13º Festival de Málaga de Cine Español en 2010.

In 1952 it was acquired by the film producer and exhibitor Francisco Gómez Reyes, a businessman from Marbella who created the largest exhibition group in Andalusia with up to 42 cinemas from Algeciras to Vélez and north to Córdoba; also a producer together with José María Forqué. This businessman carried out a deep rehabilitation and expansion, transforming the Theater into movie theaters but keeping the decoration of the building alive.
For more than 50 years he was in charge of a room that lived its golden age between the 60s and 70s with the premieres of the national projections of 'Gone with the Wind' or 'Ben Hur', and also when the Albéniz screened "exclusively in Malaga" the adventures of Terminator.
Even though this businessman is the owner of the cinema, he began to collaborate with the Malaga City Council in the mid-1990s, beginning his career as the headquarters of the Municipal Cinematheque offering independent film projections in original version and as important collaborators of the Malaga Film Festival, leaving the Albéniz cinema for free during the first 12 years, being its essential help for the film projections exhibited at the Malaga Film Festival.
After being expropriated by the City Council, the owner had no choice but to close its doors in 2008. When it was acquired by the Malaga City Council, the same activity as the previous owner was continued and it was reopened coinciding with its reopening on the 13th Malaga Spanish Film Festival in 2010.
