On December 30, 1915 the Warrior-class armored cruiser was in the Cromarty Firth outside the Town of Invergordon. On that day Captain Eric Back was hosting a film party and invited guests included the wives and children of the Natal crew. Suddenly, disaster struck. An explosion rocked the ship and the HMS Natal sank in a matter of minutes. This tragedy cost the lives of 421 crew members and civilians.
The Admiralty investigated the explosion and ruled out hostile action. They concluded the that loss of the HMS Natal was caused by an accidental internal explosion of ammunition stored at the rear of the ship, possibly due to faulty cordite.
