"Buchenwald (originally called Konzentrationslager Ettersberg) was a concentration camp, located near the city of Weimar, initially intended for political prisoners and criminals. It was in operation from July 15, 1937 until its liberation by American troops on April 11, 1945. Buchenwald held 238,979 people, including prisoners of war, political prisoners, resistance fighters, Jews, Sinti and Roma, homosexuals and Jehovah's Witnesses. About 56,000 people died at the camp, including 11,000 Jews."
