Vila Nova de Gaia or simply Gaia, is a city and a municipality in Porto District in Norte Region, Portugal. It is located south of the city of Porto on the other side of the Douro River.

Sandeman is a brand of Port founded in 1790. Founder George Sandeman was a (red-nosed) Scotsman from Perth. As well as Port, Sandeman produce Sherry, Brandy and Madeira. According to the Sandeman legend, the geezer on the logo is a caped man named Don and the cape and clobber is actually a Portuguese student’s cape and a wide Spanish hat.

Sandeman Winery is a 1797 building with tastings and guided tours of port cellars, museum and gift shop. Guides are dressed in the cape and Spanish hat.
