Doopsgezinde Vermaning Giethoorn
The Mennonite congregation in Giethoorn is one of the oldest in the country. Between 1563 and 1565 Leenaert Bouwens visited this congregation and baptized 5 people.
Soon - in the 16th century - we see the municipality split in two. Henceforth there would be a municipality of Giethoorn Noordzij and one of Giethoorn Zuidzij. The split, which at first was only geographical in nature, soon acquired religious significance as well.
The Zuidzij joined the so-called. Zonsche Sociëteit, while the Noordzij finally joined the Dantziger Oude Vlamingen, the most conservative group among the Anabaptists. Later on people also speak of Fine Mennists (North Side) and Grove Mennists (South Side). Until 1890, the two Anabaptist congregations lived side by side. Giethoorn Noordzij, however, increasingly began to lead a languishing existence, although it always had its own eldest.
However, on January 2, 1890, the church council of Zuidzij with all members (about 8) of the municipality of Noordzij to discuss a merger. As a result, all members transferred. The official announcement of this important fact took place on the following 5 January. Then the two congregations, which had lived side by side for several centuries, have become one again.
The Mennonite congregation of Giethoorn currently has 100 (baptized) members, but the number of people reached by the congregation is many times greater than the number of members.
In addition to activities for the elderly, the municipality also has many youth activities.
Incidentally, Giethoorn was one of the first Anabaptist congregations to open a Sunday school for children (in 1895).
