St. Magnus Cathedral was founded in 1137 by Earl Rognvald, a nephew of St. Magnus. Originally it was a Catholic church under the archbishop of Trondheim, Norway. When the Orkney Islands became part of Scotland in 1468, Scottish King James III gave the cathedral to the people of Kirkwall. After the Scottish Reformation of 1560, it became a Protestant cathedral. Today it is affiliated with the Church of Scotland. In 1845 the Orkney Island Council made a major restoration.

The stone cathedral is built in the shape of a cross. It is 216' long and the nave is 55' wide. The transepts in the middle of the building extend 88' from the nave. The center of the building has a 165' high clock tower and pyramidal spire.

The west facing main entrance is framed by a Gothic arch and is flanked by two smaller Gothic entrances. Above the main entrance is a large Gothic stained glass window with elaborate tracery. The nave has a gable roof and clerestory windows above an extension with a slanted roof. Below the roof are Gothic windows.

The north gable end of the transepts have single windows on the first two levels and a double set of windows on the third level. Below the gable is a circular window. The south gable end of the transept has single windows on the first two levels and a large rose window above.
