Gustave Englebrecht was born in Germany, but became a sailor in the U.S. Navy. He was serving as a coxswain aboard the warship USS Massachusetts when it was part of the U.S. Navy's Pacific Squadron in 1856. During a minor battle between the ship and the Native Americans at Port Gamble, he was killed November 21, 1856, officially making him the first ever U.S. Navy combat death in the Pacific.

It is said that "curiosity got the better of Gus Englebrecht. He poked his head above a log to view a brave just fired upon, and wrote himself into history."
