The Cathedral was founded as a Benedictine Abbey in 1092, and is
dedicated to Christ and the Blessed Virgin Mary.
The original church was built in the Romanesque or Norman style, parts of which can still be seen today. This church was gradually rebuilt from around 1250 onward in the Gothic style, a process which took about 275 years an resulted in the incredible structure seen today.
The Cathedral has a Refectory Café and a Gift Shop. They offer guided tours, group bookings and dogs are welcome.
There is no charge to go into the main area of the building but donations are gratefully received.
The Cathedral is the largest venue in the Chester for performances, events and exhibitions which they host throughout the year!
