Extract from a letter home to Penrith, from Private J. C. Titterington, 2nd Coldstream Guards: -
……"No doubt the police of the Penrith division would be sorry to hear of the death of Private Mawson at Magersfontein. He was shot through the head when returning after a hard day's fight. I see by the "Herald" they had sent him out a parcel, but alas! poor fellow, he was not there to receive it as he had answered the "last roll-call," after his blood had stained the sand on the field of Magersfontein. He was well liked by all the troops who knew him, and like many more he died fighting bravely for his country."
Mid-Cumberland and North Westmorland Herald, Saturday 10th February 1900
