Broad Cairn, at 998 metres, 3268 feet, is a Munro straddling the Angus-Aberdeenshire border on the Mounth plateau of the Grampian Mountains. The mountain is seen as a prominent blunt cone from Loch Muick to the north-east, and is separated from the massif of Lochnagar to the north by the trench containing Loch Dubh. The mountain summit area is a collection of rocks and elongated slabs, the summit being a small cairn of stones.
STEEPNESS: Initial steep slopes from Glen Muick and Glen Doll onto the plateau are followed by a more moderate ascent up to the summit.
TERRAIN: Large boulders and slabs following good paths.
ACCESSIBILITY: Just under five miles from Glen Muick to the north-east, and a little longer from Glen Doll to the south.
NAVIGATION: Tracks and well constructed paths alongside Loch Muick and the River South Esk to Bachnagairn, both converge on the watershed at a little tin hut used as a stables. From here it is a pull north-westwards up another good path until the boulders are reached and it is straight westwards to the summit. A path also runs south-eastwards from the neighbouring mountain of Cairn Bannoch up the less steep western side.
DANGER: The last few hundred feet over the boulders require care.
