Guard of the Plains is an abstract sculpture created in 1960 and set in this location in 1970. A .15-mile trail leads from the rest area up to the statue. The trailhead is marked by a small and somewhat askew sign. The trail itself is packed earth and gravel. Only foot traffic is allowed on this trail. A few parking spots are available just a few feet from the trailhead, and there is ample parking elsewhere in the rest area.
