Camp McGinnis

Side 1

Andrew McGinnis built Camp McGinnis in 1861 after Tennessee seceded from the Union. The camp was located at the junction of the Wolf and Rotten Fork Rivers, with the main encampment at the Wright family spring nearby. The camp was a recruitment site for Co. F Murray's 4th Cavalry led by Capt. W. Scott Bledsoe. On September 29, 1861, men from McGinnis under Bledsoe's command marched to Kentucky where many citizens with Confederate sympathies resided.

Side 2

The Union's 1st Kentucky Cavalry pursued them back across the border in a skirmish called "The Affair at Travisville". By 1862 Camp McGinnis served as a gathering place for Confederate Tennessee leaders. In January 1862, Brig General Zollicoffer led an unsuccessful attack on Mill Springs and after Confederate Army was defeated, Brig. Gen. Crittenden retreated to Camp McGinnis. Later the Confederates abandoned McGinnis.
