The metro station Zuidstation was inaugurated on October 2, 1988 as the opening of metro line 2 between Zuidstation and Simonis. Since December 3, 1993, the metro station is also served by trams coming from the North-South Axis (part of North Station - Lemonnier). Before the opening of the station, the tram only had an above-ground stop near the tunnel entrance in the Covered Street. This stop built in 1957 is still used today by tram lines 32, 81 and 82.
In March 2011, the construction of a new access to the subway platforms of the South Station started on the side of the Avenue Fonsny. This intervention, worth 2.4 million euros, facilitates the transfer between the metro and the tram stop on the Covered Street.
