The Fitzgerald Biosphere Reserve can be accessed when travelling from Albany to Esperance and near the town of Raventhorpe. It is in a remote location and access off the main road will require a four wheel drive vehicle. This of course will limit access and assist in the preservation of the natural environment.
The location of the sign at the edge of the reserve with a similar sign at the other edge. At this location the vegetation is characterized by low, woody vegetation which is a response to the windy location specifically in the second half of the year when heavy rains are common.
Visitors can enjoy observing Orcas near the town of Bremer Bay. This is the only population of Orcas in Australia.
The text below provides some more detail about why this area has been declared a Biosphere Reserve.
"Almost a fifth of all Western Australia's plant species thrive in the diverse landscapes of the Fitzgerald Biosphere, many of these are found nowhere else on Earth. Little wonder this flora hotspot is internationally recognised as one of the world's most botanically significant regions, with a listing in the UNESCO World Network of Biosphere Reserves.
Fitzgerald River National Park is the centre of the Biosphere, and covers more than 300,000 hectares on the south coast of Western Australia, between Bremer Bay and Hopetoun. Only 2-hours drive east of Albany, 4.5-hours drive west of Esperance, or 6.5-hours drive south east of Perth."
